Her story is my story…
Why do I support Nana Grants? Because I know what it’s like to be a single mother balancing work, school and family.
When I was 16, I discovered my passion for the law while working as an intern in the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Victim Witness Program. At the age of 23, I found myself the single mother of three young daughters. I had little education and few resources. My passion for the law persisted, however, and I was able to complete my undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and obtain my Juris Doctorate from Georgia State College of Law. I relied on family and friends to help me with child care, and many times I took the girls to school with me when I did not have someone to keep them. I also accumulated significant student loans that I am still paying off. After graduation, I worked in the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office. I entered private practice in 2013 and founded The Kirk Law Firm, P.C. in 2014.
I was fortunate to have family and friends I could rely on to make sure my girls were safe and cared for while I pursued my dream of becoming a lawyer. I support Nana Grants for all the mothers who don’t have that support.
The Nana Grants Model
Our formula is simple: money for college + quality child care = economic mobility. Each Nana Grant helps cover the cost of child care for one year, renewable for the length of the student’s program of study at a HOPE-eligible college or university in Georgia. Our goal is to remove the uncertainty of continuous, quality child care from the equation so that student mothers can focus on their studies, graduate and have a rewarding, well-compensated career. Georgia’s HOPE Grants and Scholarships expand access to higher education for everyone. Let’s make sure “everyone” includes low-income, single mothers.
